A Walk Through Shadows: Looking at the Dark Shadows Fan Panel

After two revivals, a slew of audio dramas, and countless fan gatherings, Dark Shadows was represented on the Dark Fantasy track this year at Dragon*Con.

Fans ran the gambit from fans that were devoted to the original soap opera in all its campy glory, to fans that’d seen some of the original but were more devoted fans of the 1991 revival, to Dark Shadows fans who’d never heard of it until the revival.  Represented on the panel were Julie Douberly, Clay Gilbert, and Desiree Jackson.

Julie shared very valuable information with the fans concerning the upcoming Dark Shadows movie, slated for a 2010. According to sources at the Dark Shadows Festival, Johnny Depp, a longtime Dark Shadows fan, has acquired the rights to make the film along with his production company and is also rumored to be playing the legendary Barnabas Collins. Tim Burton is rumored to be the director Depp would prefer to work with, and the screenplay is tentatively being penned by the creative team behind “Big Fish.”

Also of interest to fans is a series of audio dramas by Big Finish that are set in the original Dark Shadows universe and delve more into the back story of Quentin Collins as well as the entire Collins family. Many members of the original cast, including David Selby, have participated in these dramas and are slated to continue their involvement.

Desiree Jackson is no stranger to Dragon*Con and conventions in general. She's attended and worked in various capacities at different conventions for almost 15 years. Her devotion to fandom was sealed when introduced to fan fiction (by her mom) in high school. Although she mainly volunteers as a beta reader, Desiree has been known to write a story here and there. She's an avid science fiction fan and is excited to be working with the Daily Dragon this year.  She is thankful to be working with her talented and devoted (both to her and to scifi & the Daily Dragon) husband, Jason.
