Cosplay Spotlight: The Man Who Knows No Pain

Feared across the multiverse for his strength and inclination to refer to himself in the third person, Doctor Doom was kind enough to take a few minutes and have a small chat with me in the Hyatt lobby Thursday at 4PM.

Daily Dragon (DD): May I have your name and who you are cosplaying?

Andrew (A): Andrew, and I am cosplaying Dr. Doom.

DD: What is one word for how you are feeling in this moment?

A: Excited.

DD: How many hours would you say you have put into your cosplay?

A: I have no idea; I wore it last year and have upgraded it significantly. I have done so much, including repainting it. I couldn’t tell you the hours.

DD: More than a hundred hours? Hundreds?

A: Yeah.

DD: What’s the last thing you finished before coming to Dragon Con?

A: I updated the paint, adding this rusted effect to everything.

DD: Accuracy vs. comfort, which wins in cosplay?

A: Comfort. I mean, obviously you want to go for accuracy as much as possible, but yeah. That’s why I’m wearing crocs, as you see here.

DD: Oh, that’s awesome! I didn’t even notice those were crocs!

A: Yeah, you can get as close as possible, but if you’re uncomfortable it’s not worth it.

DD: Did you have to cut anything from the cosplay plans at the last minute?

A: I wanted to update my cloak, but don’t know how to sew. I know how to form EVA form and make armor but not sew. I wanted to learn how to sew. It didn’t happen.

DD: Which version of the cosplay is this? You said you added to it from last year?

A: This is the second major one.

DD: What is the single greatest piece of advice you can give to new cosplayers?

A: Start off with something small that you can do. There’s all kinds of templates out there. There’s YouTube videos. Start small, and start building your arsenal of cosplay tools, because there’s so much that you need. And I didn’t realize you needed it. Like a small, special knife, a heat gun, so many different things, but start out small. Build it over time.

Don’t listen to those heroes that may have bad things to say about Doctor Doom. Take it from this Daily Dragon reporter, he is a pleasure to converse with. If you see him around the con, be sure to say hi!
