Let’s Save the Honmoon! A K-Pop Sing Along For the Ages

After the unprecedented success of K-Pop Demon Hunters last year, it was no big surprise that a panel for singing along to all of the songs together to strengthen the Honmoon became a viral sensation here at Dragon Con as well. It was so popular last year in fact, that they went from a tiny room in the Hilton basement to the coveted Hilton Salon this year. On Sunday at 5:30PM, the Hilton Salon hosted the “K-Pop Demon Hunters Sing-Along” and it was a truly touching moment of unity and celebration among fans.

Though the panel started out with major technical difficulties, the camaraderie that developed between audience members while waiting the fifteen minutes it took to sort it all out was something special to see.

Once we got started off with How It’s Done the energy in the room skyrocketed. The moderator encouraged everyone to sing their hearts out as loud and proud as we could, and the audience definitely rose to the occasion.

Soda Pop is next in chronological order in the movie, but they actually played the movie’s signature song Golden next. The energy and passion during the choruses was infectious, and everyone was pumping their arms despite staying firmly in their seats. During Rumi’s sorrowful solo in the middle of the song, I was not the only one who was tearing up because you could feel just how much the lyrics were resonating with everyone in the room.

Soda Pop was a much needed moment of levity and fun, and everyone even tried to sing the Korean lyrics as well (this was true of all the songs) because they’re such an important part of the songs.

Then we sang Rumi and Jinu’s romantic ballad Free, which is always a hit with the younger crowd much like Soda Pop. It had more than one fan squealing in their seats, or lamenting the (currently) tragic ending of their relationship.

We turned up the heat with back-to-back renditions of Takedown and Your Idol, allowing everyone to embrace their edgier sides. A group dressed as the Saja Boys was even up dancing the choreography of Your Idol during the song, which was awesome to see.

Finally, we got to my favorite song that so beautifully caps off the movie and perfectly encapsulates the journeys of each of the characters, What It Sounds Like. The entire audience got to their feet for this one and raised their voices in actually pretty impressive harmony. It was a beautiful moment of togetherness, just like in the movie where the audience empowers Huntrix to defeat Gwi-Ma and the Saja Boys (with Jinu’s help too) and create the rainbow Honmoon.

For any fan, I will warn you that the line will be extremely long, but it is well worth getting there early, hopefully not having to be outside too long, and coming together with hundreds of other people that believe in the powerful messages in these songs and the movie as a whole.
