Crowds and lines were the norm at Dragon*Con 2007, but fans in the Walk of Fame Sunday afternoon were undaunted. Harry Potter fans waited patiently for James and Oliver Phelps and Matthew Lewis to return from a lunch break. The staff gave out numbers on slips of paper, so the fans could take a break, too.
Attending Dragon*Con for the first time, Ashley Fitzwater and Kim Papuga held the coveted number one spot. College students, the two came all the way from California (and skipped school Friday) to get autographs and pictures of the Harry Potter stars. When asked what they enjoyed most about the con, Ashley said, “seeing all the people in costumes.” Kim agreed, but her favorite part was “seeing the Weasley twins and Claudia Christian.”
Ann Rorie, an attendee for the past ten years, waited to get photos signed. A native of Atlanta, Ann said Dragon*Con is “bigger and better than ever.” She loved the Harry Potter series, mainly because they were “good, wholesome, entertaining movies and books.” Asked what she thought of book seven, she said it made her “sad yet elated. I really love [J.K. Rowling’s] work and her writing.”
The last person with a numbered spot was Mary Moline, number 49, who emceed two of the “Meet the Fans of Harry Potter” panels this year and also emceed the last time the twins were here. “I think Matthew Lewis makes them (the twins) more comfortable,” she said.
Outside the door, the line, described laughingly as “the poor unwashed masses” by one fan, continued to grow. A few minutes later, however, the smiling three stars appeared, and the long wait ended.
