Solar Astronomy: A Sci-Fi Sun Adventure

Attention, space enthusiasts and sci-fi fans! Throughout the convention, the Hilton’s third floor outside deck becomes a gateway to the cosmos with the thrilling “Solar Astronomy – LIVE!” event, hosted by the Space Track. This celestial celebration features an all-star lineup of astronomers—Scott Harris, Cass Marks, and Alexandra Yep—who guided attendees through a mind-blowing journey of our very own star, the Sun.

Our Sun, the glowing heart of our solar system, is just one of countless stars in the galaxy. But here on Earth, it’s a vital force, giving life to everything around us. Obviously, staring directly at this brilliant ball of fire without protection can leave you with more than just a headache—it can cause permanent blindness. That’s why our trio of expert astronomers have all the right equipment set up, allowing everyone to safely explore the sun’s fascinating features. From the shimmering corona to the dark sunspots and explosive prominences, this was a rare chance to see the sun like never before.

Our sun is currently at the peak of its 11-year solar cycle, making it more active than a space fleet on a mission to the edge of the galaxy. This increased activity has sparked a surge of interest in solar astrophotography, where enthusiasts capture stunning images of our star. Thanks to advances in technology, solar equipment is more affordable and accessible than ever. Whether you’re sliding film and glass filters over your trusty binoculars or using a dedicated solar telescope, you can now witness the sun’s dynamic behavior in various wavelengths with incredible clarity.

The event is in the Hilton through Monday.
