From his sparkling, shining star–filled entrance to his final innuendo, John Barrowman had the 7PM capacity crowd in the Hilton Grand Ballroom alternately in stitches and in awe.
No one was safe from his star power. His costume designers from Elhoffer Design were the first to feel his special brand of love, being unwittingly pulled on stage to celebrate his Wonder Woman outfit, complete with sparkling cape, tiara, and booty shorts. Their designs for Barrowman never cease to shock and amaze. His assistant, Kelsey Work, also felt the Barrowman love with stories of their travels and pranks played on unwitting flight attendants. Not to be outdone, his husband Scott and sister Carol both had their somewhat reluctant moments in the shared limelight.
Not even the audience was safe from overpowering charm and sass as he pulled on stage all the Jack (and Jackie) Harknesses for a “Jack-off session” only Barrowman could get away with. And let us not forget Barrowman’s own special brand of Kilt Blowing contest, which both he and the crowd thoroughly enjoyed.
However, in between the laughs Barrowman did what so many love him for. He was a shining star (no pun intended) for the LGBTQIA+ community. “The best way for you to get it across to those students that it is okay to be gay, to be lesbian, it’s okay to be transgender, it’s okay to be bisexual, is you live your life as openly and honestly as possible.”
There were Torchwood questions and Arrow questions. There might have been a story about John Barrowman’s tush in a co-workers trailer. There also might have been a story about an operating room selfie and the effects of pain killers. He also made sure to clarify the Doctor he most enjoyed travelling with was David “Ten-inch.” The audience was treated to innuendo, humor, and compassion. Not to mention his special rendition of the classic “Copacabana”. And if anyone else was wondering… yes those were the actual lyrics.
It was impossible to leave that room and not know that Barrowman loves his time at Dragon Con and loves his fans. It would also be impossible to leave that room and not know you want to see him at Dragon Con next year, even if it means four hours in line for the privilege.
