Cecil Baldwin (Welcome to Nightvale) started his panel on queer horror Saturday at 5:30PM in the Hyatt International North by saying that he was thrilled to be moderating a panel that he suggested to Dragon Con. From the outset, he kept the panel informal, mostly wanting to know our queer horror recommendations. Quickly, a long line of people formed, enthusiastic to give their suggestions. They ranged from the overtly queer to more “unintentionally gay” movies like Nightmare on Elm Street 2. It turns out that Baldwin is involved with a documentary titled Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street that sets out to examine the homoerotic subtext of the movie and what happens when you cast a man in the traditional scream queen role.

There wasn’t much discussion, but each recommendation seemed to delight Baldwin, and there were few that he hadn’t at least heard of himself. He noted that more than one recommendation had been on his Netflix queue for years and that he would watch them when the time is right. Baldwin also repeated a piece of advice that he’d given at an earlier panel about LGBT+ representation in sci-fi, extending it to horror. To get more queer representation in horror, make it, make it good, and then when you see it, support it.
