The biggest question aspiring writers usually have is what does it take to get my book published? At the “Secrets of Editors and Agents” panel on Sunday at 10AM, several agents and editors shared what they are looking for in a novel submission.

Originality is at the top of the list and grammar is close behind, according to John Goodwin with Writers and Illustrators of the Future. Deidre Knight, of the Knight Agency, said to write the very best book you can and that the first three to four pages are extremely important. Lucienne Diver, of the Knight Agency, James Minz, of Baen Books, and editor Kerrie L. Hughs all said that the key to a great story is the character’s voice and the sound of their narrative.

The panelists also said to do your research and don’t get discouraged. Before you submit a novel or short story, read it aloud, check the spelling and grammar, and submit it to the correct genre in the right length. Also, Anne Sowards, executive editor at Penguin, said to be professional because when they are acquiring an author they are looking for a long-term relationship. Revisions are commonplace and a good sign so don’t take the process negatively.

The book submission process can be overwhelming, but with a little creativity, time, and effort, you will be on your way to having your first book reviewed.
