It was a sold-out room when Nicolas Cage faced off with Nicolas Cage in “Cage vs. Cage: The All-Nicolas Cage Match!” Spectators gathered in Marriott M103-M105 Saturday at 2:30pm to take part in the spectacle that is a Nicolas Cage event.
The brackets were laid out with some of Nicolas Cage’s most iconic roles pitted against one another. Panelists Keith DeCandido, Gary Mitchel, Will Price, Amy Chandler, and Joe Crowe discussed the merits of Nicolas Cage as an actor and what he brought to each of the characters he portrayed. They also had some comments on the characters themselves. But the fun really started as the crowd made their voices heard.
Nothing was off limits. From hairstyle choice to the name of the characters (Memphis Raines? REALLY?), the audience was hysterically brutal at times. But it all came from a place of deep love for the eclectic actor.
As the brackets were filled we came closer to the winner of the Cage Cage Match. The second round saw Color Out Of Space vs Lord of War, Ghost Rider vs National Treasure, Face Off vs Spider-Man Noir, and Mandy vs The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. Though time was quickly running out, the audience still took time to point out various attributes of the movies and characters to help sway the vote for their favorite Cage.
The penultimate match pitted Color Out Of Space against Spider-Man Noir and Ghost Rider against The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. For this round, there was not much debate needed and Spider-Man Noir advanced to take its place against The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent in the final round.
A little debate was made at this final push for which Cage character would reign supreme. Some argued that Spider-Man would have the weight of all of the multiverse behind him, making Spider-Man Noir the best and ultimate winner. But the final nail was driven home when someone mentioned that Nicolas Cage was quite literally born to play the role in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent. AND, how could that movie, with its portrayal of Nicolas Cage in a cage match against himself NOT win in a Nicolas Cage Cage Match?
The panelists called for the last vote, and the victor was crowned. The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent was the ultimate winner of the contest. Congratulations, Nic!
