In the “Tor to Come” panel at 2:30 on Sunday in the International North Ballroom, the Tor editors presented an array of titles spanning their various lines. In addition to continuing series from familiar names, they’re launching debut authors, reprinting classics, and offering new works from bestsellers. The list included several steampunk works, old and new.
The editors touted Beth Bernobich’s debut novel Passion Play, a story of dark magic and romance comparable to Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel series. The company has two other works under contract from Bernobich. In The Last Page by Anthony Huso, a young king faces a civil war he cannot win, but he has an ally more powerful than he knows. His consort is secretly a witch, one of a sect possessing skills similar to those of ninjas and the Bene Gesserit and using math-based magic. Tor’s paranormal romance line will publish debut author Taylor Keating’s Game Over, the story of a game designer and an astral traveler drawn into the game world she creates.
R. A. Salvatore’s The Bear, set in the world of the Demon Wars, completes the character arc begun in The Highwayman. Fatal Error, the penultimate Repairman Jack novel, will appear in October, as will Piers Anthony‘s next Xanth novel, Knot Gneiss. Claire Delacroix’s Rebel continues her series about fallen angels.
Out of the Dark, the first novel in a new series from David Weber, posits an alien invasion of Earth and destruction of the planet’s urban centers, with the planetary defense spearheaded by vampires. Orson Scott Card launches a new fantasy series with The Lost Gate. Its young hero and his family are magicians hiding on Earth while their world is at war. Terry Goodkind will have a new Richard and Kahlan novel, The Omen Machine.
Reprints include, among others, 1972’s A Transatlantic Tunnel, Hurrah, steampunk alternate history from Harry Harrison, and the Michael Moorcock canon as well as a couple of Halo tie-in novels. The editors were delighted to announce that Tor will publish a new Michael Moorcock novel, with a new universe and characters, in 2011.
Other steampunk titles include The Osiris Ritual, by George Mann, The Half-Made World, by Felix Gilman, and Dreadnought by Cherie Priest.
A highlight of the panel for audience members was the opportunity to win free books, including The Way of Kings, the first book in a epic fantasy new series by Brandon Sanderson.
